We´re already used to the fact that each new group led by André Fernandes causes a healthy dose of interest and curiosity. In fact, this prodigious guitarist and composer´s path, that has significantly changed the portuguese jazz scene over the last decade, has been set by a sequence of projects that, apart from their inherent value, would never let one guess what could come next.
It´s no different with “Wonder Wheel”. I´d even say that this new surprise is even greater than all the previous ones. Maybe because it´s closer to the pop aesthetic, André Fernandes new music is perhaps less complex, but by no means less profound, than that on his previous adventures, at the same time that, because of that closeness to a more song oriented format, sounds richer and more detailed from a textural point of view.
One of the main factors to add that richness comes, without a doubt, from Inês Sousa´s contribution, a very original singer, with meticulously crafted voice and an impressive musical ear, that adapts perfectly to the typically wide and open music from Fernandes. Even more interesting is the fact that Inês Sousa refuses to embrace today´s so in vogue trend in female jazz vocalists. When so many singers word so hard to have their voices sound like an instrument, Inês sounds very effortlessly like that exactly, as one more musician in a band of great musicians.
In fact, André Fernandes, Mário Laginha, Demian Cabaud and Alexandre Frazão are a kind of an elite class of the portuguese jazz scene , that in the most inspired way, fully embrace the guitarist´s new project.
